O'Grady grew up in the city of Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton in Illinois and was graduated in 1981 with a degree from the Wheaton North High School. She appeared on a few television commercials, before moving to Los Angeles. The career path O'Grady started her career as a the model of Montgomery Ward, and well having a number of commercials. She had her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and later was cast in recurring role of ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary on ABC's NYPD Blue between 1993 through the year 1996. Each year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding Actress for a Drama Series.
